I wrote this to a Vietnamese friend:
As long as Putin continues military aggression with thousands of civilian deaths and annexationism, US public opinion will support providing military aid. Peace in Ukraine requires Russian withdrawal just as peace in Vietnam required US withdrawal.
The US and Russia have reversed roles. In Viet Nam, the US was the imperial invader and Russia provided indispensable material assistance to the authentic national government. In Ukraine Russia is the imperial invader and the US is providing indispensable material assistance to the internationally recognized government.
In both cases foreign assistance to the righteous side is motivated by geopolitical and strategic self-interest.
