If you want to leave a brief message about your personal experience with Dan, please include your full name and e-mail address for our follow-up.

18:32:33 From John McAuliff To Everyone:

I wonder whether Dan ever reflected on how close the US and Viet Nam have become economically and strategically 48 years after the war ended.  Ironically one motive for US intervention was to block China despite Vietnamese history.  Today Viet Nam and the US are brought together by China’s military aggression and hegemonism in the South China (East) Sea.  Tragically three million deaths later, we got it right.

00:52:27             lynn segal:           My dad born in 1922 was a navigator flying missions in Italy,  but my mom died from plutonium used to make atomic bombs,  as a civilian.

00:52:52             lynn segal:           We are all responsible.

00:53:07             Holley Rauen:    Thank you so much for this beautiful gathering and your words Patricia. Daniel was such a kind and caring activist. He helped my young son Gabriel get through terrible PTSD after watching Brian Willson, his brand new “stepdad”  being run over by a weapons train.  The time, care and love and support he gave to us was a lifesaver

00:55:59             Jon Seward:        It was Dan not showing up for an event at Columbia U in the Spring of 1978, that sent me down the path of Direct Action.  He didn’t show, but he sent a cassette tape, and some photos that were projected, and he explained that he’d wanted to be there, but it was more important that he be hunkered down in an improvised tent during a blizzard, on the railroad tracks, obstructing the Rocky Flats nuclear weapons facility.  Found my way there a few months later.  Never looked back.

00:56:02             evelyn tischer:   thank you Patricia for your kindness and your courage

00:57:18             alice slater:          Patricia— what an inspiring talk! Thank you for all you did in support!

I had first interviewed Dan in 1980 for a documentary I made for KQED and PBS about nuclear weapons accident. He was so passionate and intelligent and remained so throughout his long, activist life.

01:02:08             Dolores Heilbron:             Greetings to everyone, your words are very moving.

01:03:12             Quanta Dawn-Light:        Like to share this quote from a prayer for the departed souls on behalf of beloved Daniel Ellsberg---"O Thou Provider, O Thou Forgiver! A noble soul hath ascended unto the Kingdom of reality, and hastened from the mortal world of dust to the realm of everlasting glory. Exalt the station of this recently arrived guest, and attire this long-standing servant with a new and wondrous robe."--- Abdu'l-Baha

01:03:58             Steve Talbot:      Wonderful to hear Patricia Ellsberg's lively, heartfelt, inspiring words. And thank you, John, for your kind words about the film I made with Robert, The Movement and the "Madman," which includes a key interview with Dan, which we were able to do at his home in 2020. I had first interviewed Dan in 1980 for a documentary I made for KQED and PBS about nuclear weapons accident. He was so passionate and intelligent and remained so throughout his long, activist life. An honor to have known him.

01:04:12             TATANKA "KIT" BRICCA: Remembering Daniel, his words and presence at our wedding, myself and Joy Marcus, at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society at Miramar on Half Moon Bay in March of 1979, holding up young Michael and peaking about ending nuclear war, the miracles that have spared us all, the entire Human Family, and speaking about the miracle of birth of Patricia and his young newborn….Many memories…introducing Dan (with Joan Baez) to the workers in Fresno, striking and picketing at the peach ranch—where he spoke about Robert Kennedy and Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez…. a couple memorable times with Patricia and Dan at Stinson Beach and at their home in Kensington—losing grip on Michael at their home resulting in a gash in his chin…the Love of Dan and Patricia…. many speeches of Dan between constantly inspired…his last conversation with me less than a week before the doctor’s prognosis of the end, inviting us up to their home the following week to spend a whole half day & meal together—the lilt in his voice that last conversation

01:05:20             Sarah Pirtle:        Here as part of Traprock Center for Peace and Justice, began in 1978 with Randy Kehler as the first director, and so Dan has been a guardian angel. Dan came to Western Mass when Randy and his partner Betsy Corner’s home was seized by the IRS for their ethical stand on not paying war taxes. When their house was being defended, Dan came to visit and speak in the home to a large crowd of supporters. So glad for this community. I like how Barbara Deming said “we nerve one another.”

01:05:45             Dolores Heilbron:             Greetings to everyone whose words are very moving.  Dan gave us advice, appeared here and inspired us at the FIrst Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco at Geary & Franklin Streets - for many years in the past. His life and spirit was great and will remain with us forever.  Thanks, Dolores Perez Heilbron of the UUSF Human Rights Working Group.  So good to see you all and your remembrances of Dan are important!

01:06:00             Herb Ettel:           Dan served on the speakers bureau for Mobilization for Survival '77-82 and narrated a video for National Whistleblower Center I produced 1995-- Herb, DC

01:06:20             Elena Holly Klaver:           I remember that truck!

01:06:44             Beverly Lyne:      Beverly Lyne from Boulder, my gratitude is overflowing...as a community health nurse I know our work connects us over space and time...

01:06:45             Holley Rauen:    Rocky Flats action was a big inspiration for Nuremberg Actions at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in 1987.  That is when Brian lost his legs.  Some people here are, like Dan and Brian, willing to Wage Peace with our Lives.  Gratitude.

01:06:48             elizabeth lee:      imagine trying to get you to die, just for letting people know plutonium is being driven across their state

01:07:41             John Steiner:      So moved by one of Dan’s messages to young people warning different times—- beware if you do what I did re pentagon papers you likely won’t get off and could spend much of your life in jail.

Big love to you dear patricia💕🌎🙏🏼

01:07:43             Arthur Kanegis: Patricia's the real hero of the Pentagon Papers!

01:07:56             Alex Knopp:        Thank you Pat, who I met at several small meetings with Dan in Boston in the early 1970’s, and thank you Bob, a long-time family friend. I urge people and the press to recall that Dan is the most important personal link between Watergate and the Vietnam War. My own analysis along with many others’ during the past several decades is that Watergate was the Nixon pro-war campaign to attack the anti-war movement and to blame it (rightly, I think) for being such a major impediment to the military escalation of the war against North Vietnam and the PRG. Part of this is explained of course in the excellent PBS documentary The Movement and the Madman, produced by our host Robert Levering. But it was Dan’s actions to release the Pentagon Papers that led Nixon to create the Plumbers Unit in the White House and caused the efforts of Hunt and Liddy to discredit Dan that was at the center of the White House cover-up.

01:07:57             David Albert:      My wife went down to Barnwell in 1978 to train trainers and peacekeepers for actions there.

01:08:03             Kamala Platt:      Greetings from San Antonio, TX, Coahuiltecan land

01:13:13             Eric Doub:           With Dan after being arrested at Livermore, I recall many arrestees giving their names as

First name: Adam

01:18:12             alice slater:          I worked for Senator Gravels attorney who was defending the Senator against a subpoena from Nixon after Gravel read for almost a whole day the PentagonPapers into the Congressional Record because the Times had been enjoined from publishing them. The Supreme Court approved Gravels motion and we didn’t have to reveal where the papers came from. I only learned later that it was Dan who got the papers to Gravel. I actually met him in 1995 when the 25 year old Non-Proliferation Treaty was up for review and renewal. Dan fasted for 30 days during the one month NPT conference to bring attention to the need to abolish nuclear weapons. We met with him every day at the Isaiah Wall across the street from the UN.  He ended his fast at my apartment in Manhattan with a whole crowd of peace people who formed Abolition2000 calling for a treaty to finally abolish the bomb.  I made a big pot of miso soup and we became friends.

Thanks, Patricia, and all the eloquent activists who shared today. Peace, David L. Brown

01:23:05             Francis Kroncke:                Dan was part of a Peacemaking family. His son Robert and daughter (whose name I've forgotten!) worked with him on copying the Pentagon Papers. Without his wife Patricia, Dan would have not been as active. I met him when he came to witness at the draft board raiders trial of the "Minnesota 8." Later he told me at lunch one day that the real issue was nuclear weapons! Dan, Patricia, and Robert are Earth Angels! Peace, Frank Kroncke

01:23:10             Steve Talbot:      Hi, David, wonderful to see and hear from you. Like Dan, you were a wonderful, impressive voice in our documentary about the anti-war movement in 1969.

01:33:24             elizabeth lee:      The instant I saw the explosions I knew it was masterminded by authorities = like Nero blaming the Christians, as he was burning Rome.  It was a tragedy - the biggest question is how come so few people died that were in the building, know how many thousands worked there on a daily basis  No one ever asked that question?

01:33:48             Susi Newborn:   Kia ora Jon. Nice to see you! Arohanui, Susi

He left because the DOD & NTS told workers to NEVER give high radiation records from their radiation monitors.

01:35:48             elizabeth lee:      I hope they make a movie on the lives of activist so the public can see how much courage & tenacity you had in those days

01:48:14             Carl Anderson:  My Ellsberg story: In 1981, I learned the first-use aspect of "deterrence." I heard Daniel in person in a lecture hall, and that plus McGeorge Bundy (!), whose change of view led to a key paper about the difference between one kind of deterrence and another.  To me, this was & is a *very* big deal.  In 1982 & '83, I was a volunteer monitor with Livermore Action Group.  Been there again maybe 30 or 40 times, including this past Fri 8/4.  I'm a Quaker & live in Oakland CA.

 WATCH DARK CIRCLE FOR FREE

"Dark Circle" includes the first documentary footage of survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki shot by Americans. These stories, which are absent from "Oppenheimer," provide crucial information still so painful it is rarely faced. The links between nuclear power and weapons, denied by those who want nuclear power to be seen as clean and green, provide additional context.

O Thou kind Lord!  This gathering is turning to Thee.  These hearts are radiant with Thy love.  These minds and spirits are exhilarated by the message of Thy glad-tidings.  O God!  Let this American democracy become glorious in spiritual degrees even as it has aspired to material degrees, and render this just government victorious.  Confirm this revered nation to upraise the standard of the oneness of humanity, to promulgate the Most Great Peace, to become thereby most glorious and praiseworthy among all the nations of the world.  O God!  This American nation is worthy of Thy favors and is deserving of Thy mercy.  Make it precious and near to Thee through Thy bounty and bestowal.
